Article VI of the U.S. Constitution establishes that it is “the supreme law of the land.” Efforts to impose here alternative legal systems – especially one like Islam’s sharia that is fundamentally antithetical to the Constitution’s provisions and the freedoms they guarantee – are inherently unconstitutional.

Even more egregious is the fact that sharia’s express purpose is not simply to operate in parallel with other legal systems, but to replace them. In practice, that constitutes sedition as defined by Merriam-Webster’s dictionary as “the incitement of resistance to or insurrection against lawful authority.”

As legislators at federal and state levels confront the imperative need to counter sharia that is now metastazing across America, a growing number recognize the salience of what then-Assistant U.S. Attorney Andrew McCarthy did in securing the conviction of the so-called Blind Sheikh, Omar Abdel-Rahman, on seditious conspiracy charges in connection with his role in the first jihadist attack on the World Trade Center in 1993.
